Dirty Chatroulette is a webcam-based chat service, created in 2009 by French developer Cyril Nicaud. The site allows users to randomly pair in one-on-one chat sessions where they chat anonymously using the names “You” and “Stranger” or “Stranger 1” and “Stranger 2” in the case of Spy mode. Dirty Chatroulette has been described as a precursor to Omegle (which offers video chats), although it differs from Omegle in that it does not connect users on the basis of their location, but rather connecting them randomly without any consideration for whether they are strangers or known to each other.

The website was launched on January 13th 2010 with 50,000 users joining within 24 hours[1]. Within two weeks it had gained over 10 million visitors.[2]

The site was created by 18-year old Leif K-Brooks of Brattleboro, Vermont, and was launched on November 16, 2009. The site’s name comes from the French word “roulette” meaning “wheel”.

According to Brooks, he came up with the idea after seeing an article about a random webcam chatroom in Wired magazine. He noted that most people in the room were staring at their own webcams rather than talking to each other; he described this as “a race to see who can be most interesting or attractive.” In essence, he wanted to create a place where people could meet strangers and have real conversations or share ideas.

In June 2010, a few months after the website was created, it had reached nearly 1.5 million page views per day.

The company only employs between 35 to 50 people, most of whom are based in Russia and Ukraine. This is somewhat disconcerting considering how dangerous it can be to be gay in some parts of those countries – but don’t worry too much about it because we have no reason to think they have anything nefarious planned for your computer!

The site initially had 20 users each time, and then it doubled daily for a period, according to Ternovskiy in 2010 past observations.
